The Curse: Emma Stone's TV Show Guide & Everything You Need To Know

Publish date: 2024-01-14

If you're into all things a bit… well, strange, you might want to check out Emma Stone's new TV show, The Curse. It's got experimental creator Nathan Fielder behind it (best known for his work on similarly odd The Rehearsal, Oppenheimer and Nathan For You) and actor-indie filmmaker Benny Safdie (Uncut Gems and Good Time) , making this as edgy, unsettling and smart as you'd probably expect. Hardly surprising then that the show has already been dubbed the weirdest show of the year so far by critics ahead of its release on Paramount+ this month.

Safdie and Fielder have written the series which revolves around a married couple creating a television pilot for a home-improvement series in the town of Espanola, New Mexico and battling some spooky forces. Excitedly, it's the first time Emma Stone has appeared in a TV show since 2018's Maniac.

Intrigued? You should be. Here's everything we know about The Curse.

What is The Curse about?

According to Deadline, The Curse is a “genre-bending series that explores how an alleged curse disturbs the relationship of a newly married couple as they try to conceive a child while co-starring in their new home-improvement show.”

Stone and Fielder star as Asher and Whitney Siegel, a husband-and-wife duo who land their own house-flipping series as hosts of Flipanthropy, a show on US channel HGTV. The comedy series has been billed as a comedy satire as this ‘curse’ makes itself known in the couple's relationship, while they are attempting a TV show and trying to fall pregnant.

The trailer shows the Siegels in Espanola, New Mexico, filming clips for their new TV show with Fielder’s character handing money to a little girl, which he tries to snatch back after the cameras stop rolling – prompting her to curse him. And of course, that's the beginning of it all…

Who is starring in The Curse?

Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder star as the lead couple, attempting to film a TV show and have a baby.

Benny Safdie takes on both co-creator of the show and plays the couple's TV producer. Other cast members include Barkhad Abdi, Corbin Bernsen and Constance Shulman.

Where can I watch The Curse?

The series has land on Paramount+ in the UK on November 11, streaming weekly. There are 10 episodes in the series, each an hour long.

What are the reviews of The Curse?

The show initially debuted the first three episodes at The New York Film Festival in October 2023 and TV critics who have gotten hold of preview access have been quick to commend the series for its total unique-ness.

Entertainment Weekly dubbed it “the weirdest, most unforgettable show of 2023” with writer Kristen Baldwin talked of a “truly bizarre finale," writing, “It's certainly not something we've seen before, nor am I convinced that it makes any kind of sense within the story itself. That said, I haven't been able to stop myself from noodling over theories.”

Elsewhere, The BBC called it a “brilliantly unsettling new television comedy” rating it 5 stars and concluding, “The Curse is already one of the most richly imagined and acted shows of the year.”

The Evening Standard similarly hailed it as “captivating” and “A24 (the studio behind the series) has pulled off an absolute blinder with The Curse.”

Rolling Stone said it “might be the most uncomfortable show of the year".
